Alice is the Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller and memory management chip in Commodore's Advanced Graphics Architecture (AGA) chipset, functioning as the successor to the original Agnus chip introduced in the Amiga 1200 and Amiga 4000. It manages all DMA operations including the blitter, copper, display fetching, and audio while supporting 24-bit addressing to access up to 16MB of Chip RAM, a significant increase from Agnus's 1MB or 2MB limitations. Alice works in conjunction with the Lisa chip to enable the enhanced graphics capabilities of AGA, including 24-bit color support and higher resolutions, while maintaining backward compatibility with original chipset (OCS/ECS) software.
