IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is a standard interface for connecting storage devices that was integrated into the Amiga 600 and Amiga 1200, marking the first time Commodore included built-in hard drive support in a compact Amiga form factor. Unlike earlier Amiga models that required expensive SCSI controllers or expansion cards for hard drive connectivity, the A600 and A1200 feature an internal 44-pin IDE connector designed specifically for 2.5-inch laptop hard drives. This integration significantly reduced the cost of adding mass storage to these systems and made hard drives accessible to a broader range of users, though the implementation was limited to PIO transfer modes and lacked some advanced features found in contemporary PC IDE controllers.
